Choosing Quartz

Date Posted: 21st November 2018

Quartz is an igneous rock which is formed after a molten rock is cooled.  It can be sourced from across the globe, with each quarry producing unique stone.

Quartz is a man-made material made up for approximately 80-95% quartz and the remaining resins, polymers and pigments.   The pigment is used to colour the quartz.  This creates a very durable material that is more than a match for today's busy lives.

  • Quartz worktops are durable, just like granite.  However, the resin makes the quartz much more flexible, so it is less likely to chip or crack.
  • Quartz is non-porous so it does not need sealing.  Making it a very low maintenance option.
  • Quartz is stain resistant and easy to clean.
  • Quartz performs with both hot and cold temperatures, making it less likely to be damaged under extremes.
  • UV rays can damage quartz, so if your room gets a lot of direct sun the quartz could discolour.
  • If you choose a lighter colour of quartz the seems may be visible, however, our masons are experts and will ensure this is as hard to spot as possible

So what should you choose granite or quartz?  We love both.  Over the years there has been a marked increase in the percentage of quartz countertops, stairs, fireplaces and bathrooms, however, there is still many benefits of granite.
